Port de Bal\u00e8s er plassert i hardeste etappekategori for franske sykkelritt,\u00a0HC (Hors Categorie). Fram til sommeren 2006 var s\u00f8rsiden grusveg, men n\u00e5 er hele veien over Port de Bal\u00e8s asfaltert. Arrang\u00f8rene av Tour de France letet etter nye ruter i Pyreneene og dermed kom Port de Bal\u00e8s inn. Fra passh\u00f8yden f\u00f8rer veien\u00a0<i>D 925<\/i>\u00a0etter 3,5 kilometer mot vest til den 1\u00a0855\u00a0h\u00f8ye\u00a0<i>Port de Pierrefite<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p>Port de Bal\u00e8s stod 23. juli 2007 for f\u00f8rste gang p\u00e5 programmet i\u00a0Tour de France\u00a0(17. etappe). F\u00f8rstemann over toppen var\u00a0Kim Kirchen. En etappe av Tour de France i 2010, 2012 og 2014 gikk ogs\u00e5 over passet.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<h4>Vi husker det dramatiske \u00f8yeblikket fra TDF historien, da Andy Schleck mistet kjedet og m\u00e5tte stoppe opp, mens Alberto Contador valgte \u00e5 sette inn et rykk istedenfor \u00e5 vente. Sv\u00e6rt usportslig mente mange, og bidro til at Contador mistet noe av stjerneglansen hos sykkelfans.<\/h4>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Port de Bal\u00e8s var ogs\u00e5 avsluttende fjell i en t\u00f8ff fjelletappe under Tour de France i 2014, f\u00f8r rytterne dundret ned fjellsidene mot m\u00e5l i Bagn\u00e8res de Luchon.<\/p>\n<p>Starter du fra Bagn\u00e8res de Luchon er klatringen opp til Port de Bal\u00e8s 19.66 km lang. Over denne distansen klatrer du 1125 h\u00f8ydemeter. Gjennomsnittlig stigningsprosent er 5.7 %.<\/p>\n<p>Starter du fra Maul\u00e9on Barousse er veien opp til Port de Bal\u00e8s 18.87 km lang.
